"Hailakandi Police Arrest Two Bangladeshi Nationals Suspected of Illegal Immigration"

In a notable development, Hailakandi Police detained two Bangladeshi nationals suspected of illegal immigration following a tip-off from Bilaipur Police. Rubel Ahmed Sheikh and his mother, Amirun Begun, were arrested and brought before the Chief Judicial Magistrate's court today.

Since their unauthorized entry in 2019, the mother-son pair had been living quietly in a village in Bilaipur, Hailakandi, avoiding detection until authorities received critical intelligence. Nabajit Lahon, head of the Bilapur Police Outpost, and his team played a crucial role in capturing the suspects. Rubel Ahmed Sheikh and Amirun Begun were swiftly brought before the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Hailakandi, where their case will proceed through the legal system.

The permeable border between the two neighboring countries has been a matter of discussion for many years. Border agents demand substantial sums from people seeking to migrate to India for better opportunities but cannot pursue the legal visa and passport route. The latest modifications to the Citizenship Act, announced by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on March 11, 2024, offer an expedited path to citizenship for Hindus, Parsis, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, and Christians who sought refuge in India from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan before December 31, 2014. The law excludes Muslims, who constitute the majority in all three countries.
